Last month, rumors surfaced that mango farmers in several Mekong Delta provinces are afraid to eat their own fruit due to safety concerns. This springs from the news that the fruits are wrapped in unsafe Taiwanese-made bags before harvest, and is said to have caused a 50 percent slump in mango prices last month.
A kilogram of Cat Chu, a specialty of Dong Thap Province, now sells at only VND15,000 (US$0.67), Tran Hoang Dan, who runs the provinces largest fruit wholesale facility, said.
Farmer
